Police Recover 2 Stolen Guns & 20 Rounds of Ammunition in Volta; Ex-Security Officer Suspected

Police in the Volta Region have recovered two stolen firearms and 20 rounds of ammunition during an operation that shocked many residents.

The weapons were discovered hidden on a farmland, raising fresh concerns about the circulation of illegal guns in Ghana.

According to local police, the weapons were retrieved after a tip-off from community members who had noticed suspicious activities in the area.

Officers immediately launched a search, which led them to the farmland where the guns and ammunition had been carefully concealed.

One suspect has since been arrested in connection with the discovery. Police say the man, believed to be a former security officer, is currently in custody while investigations continue.

Authorities suspect that the firearms may have been linked to criminal operations in the region, though the exact purpose remains unclear.

The arrest has triggered widespread discussion about the role of former military and police officers in the handling of firearms.

Security experts argue that while most ex-officers live peacefully, a few misuse their training and access to weapons to fuel criminal activities.

Police have emphasized the importance of keeping track of weapons issued to security officers to prevent them from ending up in the wrong hands.

Residents of the area expressed both relief and concern following the recovery.

“We are happy the weapons were found before they could be used to harm anyone,” one resident said. “But it is also worrying to know that such dangerous items were hidden right here in our community.”

Authorities say efforts are now underway to trace the origin of the firearms and to determine whether more weapons are being kept in similar hideouts across the region.

Investigators are also looking into whether the suspect worked with accomplices.

The Volta Regional Police Commander praised the collaboration between residents and law enforcement, urging communities across Ghana to remain alert.

“Security is everyone’s responsibility. Whenever you see something unusual, speak up. Together, we can prevent crime and protect our people,” he said.
