Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, a former General Secretary of Ghana’s ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has delivered a blistering critique of ex-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, accusing his administration of incompetence and arrogance.
In a recent interview on Asempa FM, Agyapong broke his long silence, stating that he had previously held back out of loyalty to his former boss and the party, but now feels duty-bound to speak the truth.
Agyapong did not mince words, describing the former government as disastrous for Ghana.
He alleged that Akufo-Addo’s leadership was characterized by poor decision-making, a lack of accountability, and an inner circle more focused on self-interest than national development.
According to Agyapong, this style of governance inflicted lasting damage on the country’s economy and institutions.
He specifically highlighted pressing national issues such as severe economic hardship, soaring unemployment, and the persistent depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.
These challenges, he argued, were not mere accidents but direct results of failed policies and misguided priorities under Akufo-Addo’s watch.
Agyapong further claimed that public trust in both the government and the NPP eroded significantly because of what he called a “stupid” and arrogant approach to ruling.
Beyond the former president, Agyapong called on the NPP as a whole to engage in honest self-reflection.
He stressed that if the party hopes to regain the confidence of Ghanaian voters in future elections, it must acknowledge its past mistakes rather than defend the indefensible. “We cannot move forward if we refuse to admit where we went wrong,” he implied.
The interview has sparked intense debate across Ghana’s political landscape. Supporters of Agyapong praise his courage in speaking truth to power, viewing his comments as a necessary push for accountability.
Critics, however, see the outburst as a sign of internal NPP factionalism playing out in public, potentially weakening the party ahead of upcoming political contests.
Regardless of interpretation, Agyapong’s remarks have reopened discussions about Akufo-Addo’s legacy and the future direction of the NPP.
As Ghana prepares for future election cycles, this high-profile criticism from within the party’s own ranks may signal deeper tensions to come. The source of the original report is Asempa FM.
