Fear and uncertainty have gripped the Kobedi community in the Sunyani West Municipality of Ghana’s Bono Region following the mysterious deaths of two headteachers of the same school within a space of seven months.
Residents are now calling for urgent spiritual intervention as anxiety continues to spread across the area.
According to a report by YEN published on Saturday, May 23, 2026, the first tragedy occurred in September 2025 when the headmaster of Kobedi AME Zion Basic School died unexpectedly.
The incident shocked both staff and residents, but many hoped it was an isolated case.
However, the situation took a more disturbing turn in April 2026 when the newly appointed headmistress, Gladys Dorlo Batinge, also died after taking over the same position at the school.
The back-to-back deaths have fueled widespread fear and speculation among community members, many of whom believe the incidents may be linked to a curse allegedly placed on the school.
Reports suggest the supposed curse originated from a person in the nearby Nzor community who was unhappy over allegations that school authorities had been extorting money from residents.
Although no official evidence has confirmed these claims, the rumours have intensified panic among teachers, parents, and students.
The Queen Mother of Kobedi, Nana Ameyaa Ansu Gyeabour, has confirmed that traditional leaders are preparing cleansing rituals aimed at restoring peace and preventing any further deaths.
She explained that chiefs and elders are also working to resolve underlying disputes believed to have contributed to the tension in the community.
Meanwhile, the Krotihene of Kobedi, Nana Korang Amoah Asimpi, has criticised some media outlets for spreading unverified information that has worsened fear among residents. He urged journalists to confirm facts with the traditional council before publishing reports.
The school remains closed as education authorities prepare to meet with the Kobedi Traditional Council to discuss the possible reopening of the school and assess the emotional readiness of teachers to return to work.
