Awal Mohammed, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party, has alleged glaring double standards in the manner in which the public and political actors scrutinize the conduct of Chief Justices, drawing a comparison between former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo and current Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie.
In a Facebook post dated May 31, 2026, Mr. Mohammed stated that former Chief Justice Torkonoo never attended any social events held by NPP party officials, yet she was unfairly labelled an ‘NPP Women’s Organiser’ by the NDC’s national officers.
The statement comes in the wake of Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s attendance at the funeral of the father-in-law of Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress.
Mr. Mohammed contended that had Justice Torkonoo attended a similar function for a senior member of the previous administration, critics would have accused her of partisanship.
“Imagine if Chief Justice Torkonoo had attended the funeral of an NPP official’s relative—let alone a father-in-law. The self-proclaimed neutrals would have immediately claimed she was in bed with the government,” he wrote.
Mr. Mohammed further observed that following Justice Torkonoo’s removal from office, even her choice of legal representation, Mr. Godfred Dame, became a subject of public commentary.
He acknowledged that attending private social events may not be improper, but maintained that the inconsistent standards applied expose their own hypocrisy.
He also noted that under Ghana’s judicial administration framework, the Chief Justice holds the constitutional authority to empanel judges and will therefore determine the composition of panels hearing cases involving the state and former NPP appointees. He added that Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s wife has been appointed Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service.
