Former National DRIP Coordinator, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has strongly challenged allegations made by former Okaikwei North Member of Parliament, Fuseini Issah, regarding claims that President John Dramani Mahama once promised to remove the Chief Justice while in opposition.
The controversy erupted after Issah suggested in a recent political discussion that the then-opposition leader, now President, John Dramani Mahama, had at some point indicated an intention to remove the Chief Justice if given political power. The claim has since sparked heated debate across political circles, with critics demanding evidence to support such a serious allegation.
However, Vanderpuye has dismissed the assertion, insisting that it is misleading and politically motivated. He further challenged Issah to provide concrete proof of the statement, particularly any video recording that captures Mahama making such a pronouncement.
In a firm rebuttal, Vanderpuye stated that the credibility of the claim hinges entirely on evidence and not hearsay or political interpretation. He went further to raise the stakes, suggesting he would reconsider his own political ambitions if such proof were produced.
If you can provide a video where President Mahama said he would remove the Chief Justice, I'm prepared to reverse my intention to contest the [NDC National Executive] elections,” Vanderpuye declared.
His remarks have intensified the ongoing political tension, with supporters of both sides weighing in on social media and radio discussions. Some observers argue that the exchange reflects deeper mistrust within political discourse, while others see it as part of routine partisan sparring ahead of internal party contests.
The issue of judicial independence has remained a sensitive topic in Ghana’s political landscape, often triggering strong reactions whenever referenced in partisan debates. Analysts note that allegations involving the removal of high-ranking judicial officers require careful substantiation due to their constitutional implications.
As the debate continues, attention now shifts to whether any verifiable evidence will emerge to settle the dispute or whether the controversy will fade into the long list of politically charged claims that dominate election seasons in the country.
