Sammy Gyamfi’s father-in-law’s funeral decorations and fittings were rented- Steve Manteaw

Steve Manteaw, Co-chair of the Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, has challenged claims that National Democratic Congress National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi spent huge sums of government money on the funeral of his father-in-law held over the weekend in Kumasi.

Mr. Manteaw was reacting to a short clip from the funeral that has since gone viral on social media and sparked debate among Ghanaians.

Some members of the opposition New Patriotic Party have accused Mr. Gyamfi of using state funds to finance what they described as a display of opulence.

In a Facebook post on May 31, 2026, Mr. Manteaw disputed the allegations, insisting that the decorations and fittings used for the funeral were rented just like most funerals in Ghana.

“This is a short clip from the funeral that some claim was a display of opulence. All the decorations and fittings were rented just like most funerals in Ghana,” he wrote.

He further addressed the large crowd that attended the event. According to him, the huge number of prominent Ghanaians present was due to Mr. Gyamfi’s popularity as a lawyer and political communicator.

He stressed that the funeral attracted bigwigs of both the NDC and the NPP.

“As for the numbers, they were huge, including NPP stalwarts like Sammy Awuku and Agyapa Mercer. Let’s stop the mischief,” Mr. Manteaw added.

He urged Ghanaians to disregard claims that Mr. Gyamfi displayed opulence or misused public funds during the funeral.

Mr. Manteaw’s comments add to the growing public debate that has greeted the funeral of the father-in-law of the NDC National Communications Officer.
